Birth as a Team

When my wife suggested that we hire a doula, I had no idea what she was talking about. Doula, midwife, wet nurse -- all synonyms as far as I understood. After careful attempts to educate me, I still thought of it as something that might be helpful to have if your moms were too busy. However, the medical industrial complex is a mysterious and fearsome entity to me, so I obliged my wife with an interview.
I was immediately impressed with Leila's knowledge, and professionalism. We quickly hired Devotion, and I can confirm without hesitation that it was the most valuable purchase we've made toward the birth of our daughter. Throughout the pregnancy, Leila consistently demonstrated her absolute commitment to ensuring my wife and I had the birthing experience we wanted. This included getting to know our expectations, and then explaining options along with the risks and evidence-based recommendations.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, hospitals no longer allowed doulas. This was discouraging. We had built up such a confidence knowing Leila would be there guiding us. Fortunately, all was not lost. Modern technology allowed Leila to attend virtually. Although she couldn't be there physically, she remained just as committed, staying attentively on the line throughout the night in case we had a question and to keep updated if a nurse or doctor walked in. When the time finally came to deliver our daughter, we had the phone propped up on the wall with Leila on a video call so she could see the room and interact. At one point during the immediate post-birth chaos, I was overwhelmed and mostly staying with our daughter a few steps away, so I ran to get the phone so Leila could 'be with' my wife. I even asked Leila if everything was okay. It really was like she was there, except like with no arms or legs.
To say I wholeheartedly recommend Devotion Doula & Yoga would be an understatement. Leila has spoken of leaving for midwifery school, and my wife and I have more than joked about following her or waiting until she comes back to have another child. We would have been lost without her. Thanks again Leila
